WOOT - took so long to type this that GW came up in the meantime.
************************************************** ****
OK Well I just found this thread.
I'm on 4Mb Virgin line in guess where? Dorset.
I phoned the 25p/min line and got transfered to call centre in India. 14 mins later I had run inetwiz, cleared my ie7 cookies and then told to wait for 2 hours and try again - it was after I was asked to restart in safe mode that I politely told him that I was putting the phone down.
I have never had an issue with my NTL/Virgin line before.
Strange thing is I am just about to move house, i've been telling everyone that I would be staying with Virgin, but I have been waiting for a week for them to tell me that I can get Broadband in the new house. I think that they will be getting a strong 'free' phone call tomorrow saying that if they do not sort it i will be switching to sky, orange or bt.
Any recommendations

well done VM
the only problem i truly have with VM is that they have to have their backsides kicked to get them into gear
if you hadn't managed to get them moving milan do you think we would be online tonight?
but i respect that you think alot of them I'm just sating my opinion which is just as valid as everyone else's =)
anyway thank you for doing the butt kicking milan and thank you VM for receiving that butt kicking
now I'm off to play guildwars! whoohoo! lol
take care maties see you around the forums

I still hate them Maybe I'll be more forgiving when they refund my few hundred pounds, and up my connection speed. But anyways, I'm back on GW

Just await your Christmas/new years present from them.
Like I said before there are plans to up connections for people at no fee. 1mb to 2, 2 to 4, even from 10 to 20. Those on 20mb should expect to see a reduction in the cost of your 'download the world' line.

Finally!! I'm in, but now I have to dowload all the maps >.< because I tried everything, including downloading a new dat file (because guilders suggested on vent that the update might have caused the problem) so not only have I missed out on 5 hours playing time, I can't play anything tonight and will have to leave my comp on so I can download the maps, which is electricity I can't really afford to waste.
All in all tonight has been one hell of a pile of horse manure, and it's all Virgin Media's fault. They're the ones that broke it.

Just for a little bit of closure on this one.
Just received a call from a chap called Mark at VM, he was the engineer in charge of getting it all back up.
He wanted to explain to me what happened so I could pass it onto you guys.
VM hold a backbone in Northampton that links to Frankfurt. Much of the online gaming, hosting companies etc route from this backbone to Frankfurt.
Yesterday at approx 13:30 there was a filter update at both ends. This filter update caused the link between Norhampton and Frankfurt to drop out.
The irony here is that it wasn't VM's fault. Once they were alerted to this they got right onto it and started work on identifying what the issue was. Once they had the ip's required they were able to see that it was the filters. These have now been rolled back.
If at any point the filters are updated you can be very sure that a stricter QA system will be in place to prevent this kind of issue arising again.

meh... explainations aside... I decided to switch to Sky broadband cos I finally realised how ripped off I was being with VM. C'mon... £25 a month for 4mb. I Rang sky and now im gonna move to up to 8 to 16 MB for my sky tv AND broadband for £27. I rang to cancel and they offered to reduce my VM to £17 if I stayed.. tempting but after wasting £20 phoning India I have had enough. At least the support at sky is UK based.

What a great thread!
Very little QQing :-)
I've been with Virgin (previously Blueyonder) for about 10 years I think and had one of the first cable modems in the country (512K.. Woooo!!!). At the time that arrived I was on BT ISDN 64K and the difference was amazing! not just in speed but in cost as well!)
Since then of course we have had countless speed updates to what is now 20meg and should be looking forward to that being increased again to 50meg sometime during 2008. (Check out www.cableforum.co.uk for discussion on this).
In that time I can count the number of serious outages on one hand.
I really like my Virgin service to be honest. I'm on their absolute maximum packages on everything for £87 per month (except calls to mobile phones). For that I get everything that you can possibly get by way of TV, Phone, and Internet including sports, movies, Setanta, unlimited calls, the V+ box (which is rather superb), HDTV, a second standard digibox, and 20meg broadband If you pay more than this (or near it) then check out the Virgin VIP packages as the total cost of all the packages combined comes to around £125 per month.
Basically it all just works 99.9% of the time.
I still strongly object to the premium rate helpdesk number though especially considering how much I pay them a month.
Anyway, well done to all involved who got this resolved!
